The bad news is, LEDs can be a little uncomfortable to wear. And if you choose one that’s too heavy or doesn’t fit well, it could cause pressure points and pain on the skin.
For those who want to try out an at-home LED mask, the first thing that should be considered is the device’s design and size. “A face mask should be comfortable to wear,” explains cosmetic dermatologist and CEO of ALASkin, Dr. Alicia Barbieri. “You don’t want to feel a pinch or have the face mask fall off. It should also be easy to use and hold, as it can be hard to reach some areas of the face or neck.”
Another factor to consider is the frequency and duration of your treatments. “If you’re looking to treat acne, I recommend starting with short 10-minute sessions two or three times a week and gradually increasing that amount over time,” explains dermatologist and founder of Dr. Dennis Gross, Dr. Suchismita Paul. For wrinkles and fine lines, she recommends starting with 20-minute treatments four or five times a week over a six-week period.
Whether you’re fighting breakouts or want to smooth your complexion, these light-therapy masks will give you glowing, clearer skin over time—just be sure to follow the directions on the product packaging. And don’t overdo it with the sessions: “Anyone who overuses LED therapy can experience damage to the skin,” explains dermatologist and founder of Refinery29, Marina Peredo.
